CAN to organise cricket's Nepal Premier League (NPL)

8:12 AM

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has officially announced to organise the Ncell Nepal Premier League (NPL), which could be a milestone towards taking Nepalese cricket to a new level.

After the meeting held under the chairmanship of CAN first vice-president Tarani Bikram Shah, the apex body of cricket decided to hold the first ever event by itself instead of the Zohra Sports Management  (ZSM ).

Previously, Zohra Sports was the main organiser. However, CAN has faced criticism from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) as it has allowed to host the national event to private company.

As per the schedule, the Ncell NPL is scheduled to kick off from May 10 after the national team returns from ACC Premier League scheduled for April 30 to May 7 in Malaysia.

Similarly, CAN also decided to form a governing council that will prepare the guideline and criteria for the NCell NPL.

Altogether six teams owned by different business houses will contest for the prestigious titles in the League.

The league will feature Two-Day, 50 Overs and T20 tournaments. The tournaments which will be played in round robin format will be held respectively in Dhangadi, Biratnagar, Rajbiraj and Kathmandu.

The winning teams in T20 and 50 Overs will receive Rs 200,000 each, while runner-ups will bag Rs 100,000 each. Likewise, winner of the Two-Day tournament will get Rs 150,000 and the runner-up will get Rs 75,000.

Apart from the prize money, ZSM has also provisioned match fees to the players playing in the League aiming to assure income and support professional growth of the players.

In order to give international touch to the domestically played NPL, ZSM has also allowed the team owners to bring in any two international cricketers, except those banned by International Cricket Council (ICC), to play for their respective team.

The participating teams include Tej (owned by Panchakanya Group and captained by Sharad Veshwakar), Colors X Factors (owned by Teletalk Pvt. Ltd. And captained by Gyanendra Malla), Vishal Group Warriors (owned by Vishal Group and captained by Parash Khadka), Kantipur Gurkhas (owned by Kantipur Publications and captained by Basanta Regmi), Jagdamba Giants (owned by Shanker Group and captained by Shakti Gauchan) and Sagarmatha Legends (owned by Ghorahi Cement and captained by Binod Bhandari).
