CAN bowls wrong ’un to coach; players cry foul

12:59 AM

In a shocking decision, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) on Tuesday backtracked on its previous commitment by handing coach Pubudu Dassanayake only a three-month contract extension, a gesture national team skipper Paras Khadka termed as embarrassing and the cricket ruling body’s attempt to indirectly get rid of the former Sri Lankan Test international.

Dassanayake and CAN had agreed on a one-year contract just a week before his previous contract expired in March. But the new contract states his tenure concludes on June 30. Dassanayake received the letter only hours before the national team’s departure to Malaysia for the ACC Premier League, beginning from Thursday. “The CAN executive committee had agreed on a one-year extension, but the one I received today is different from the one we had agreed upon,” a dejected Dassa- nayake said at the airport.

Dassanayake said he was told that the ongoing investigation by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has forced CAN to put his signing on hold. CAN officials have been under the CIAA scanner after the national team members, in a public outburst, alleged them of embezzling millions of rupees set aside for the unfinished Cricket Stadium project in Mulpani.
