Migrant worker-friendly MOUs must to improve conditions

“What will I do without you, take me also with you,” she sobbed bitterly until her shawl was all wet.

In a half-conscious state, she tried to hug the seven-foot long coffin while relatives tried to calm her so that she could face the reality. She, however, persisted in trying to open the coffin lid.

Laxmi Tamang wanted to see the body of her dead husband just once as it arrived at Tribhuwan International Airport from Saudi Arabia. San Singh Tamang’s death has left his family in a huge quandry as he was their only bread winner.

The family had to struggle hard through government red tape to bring the body back to Kathmandu. Saudi Arabia, compared to other Gulf countries, is said to have stringent rules when it comes to repatriating dead migrant workers.

“I want to take my husband’s body back to the village and perform the funeral rites so that his soul may rest in peace,” Laxmi said.

The arrival of the body is not the end of Laxmi’s woes because she now has to take care of her two daughters and a son, pay back loans and provide medical treatment for an elder son. If she fails to find the money for an operation for the latter, who is suffering from heart disease, there is no chance of his survival.
