Govt revises fuel prices by Rs 5.5 per liter

Bowing down to intense pressure from the opposition parties, the government on Thursday decided to partially roll back the prices of petroleum products.

The Legislature-Parliament that was halted for two consecutive days over recent hike in fuel prices resumed immediately after the government decided to readjust the prices.

Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation Mahesh Acharya informed the House that the government has decision to revise the prices of petroleum products.

The government has decided to reduce Rs 5.5 per liter in petrol and Rs 3.5 each per liter in diesel and kerosene, Minister Acharya said.

Earlier on March 14, the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) had hiked the price of petrol by Rs 10 per liter and the price of diesel/kerosene by Rs six each per liter.

The government has increased Rs six per liter in aviation fuel for domestic flights and Rs 10 per liter for international flights.

The government took the decision to partially reduce the prices of petroleum products after the opposition parties including the UCPN (Maoist), Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal obstructed the parliament meeting slated for 11 this morning.

Fifteen different student unions had called for a general strike in the Valley on Wednesday to pressurise the government to revoke the decision to hike petroleum products.

Minister Acharya informed that a parliamentary committee would be formed to seek a permanent solution to the crisis of petroleum products.
