11:25 AM

The transport entrepreneurs have agreed to provide Rs 1 million in compensation to the family of folk singer Manju Mahat, who died in a road accident on Saturday. The money will be used for the upbringing of the singer’s two infant children.

Meanwhile, the protest programmes announced by Mahat’s friends, relatives and artistes have been called off after the transport entrepreneurs agreed to offer the compensation , and the local administration vowed to take action against the drivers of the microbuses that had knocked down Mahat’s scooter on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, artistes had staged a sit-in calling for proper compensation to the family of folk singer Mahat at Gongabu Chowk. Twelve artists, including the chairperson of the Folk and Dohari Song Foundation, were arrested during the protest. The situation got tense for a brief moment after a scuffle erupted between police and the agitating side.

According to singer and a friend of Mahat’s, Hemanta Sharma, in a meeting which took place at the Sorakhutte police beat on Sunday, the other party also agreed to repair the scooter and provide treatment expenses to Mahat’s sister Bidhya who had also sustained injuries in the accident. The artistes community have also urged the government to name Galkopakha road section, the place of the accident, as Manju Mahat road.

The folk singer was knocked down in a road accident involving her scooter and two micro buses in Galkopakha of Thamel on Thursday afternoon. She died in course of treatment at the Capital-based Grande Hospital on Saturday evening.

Mahat’s last rites will be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat with a funeral procession on Monday.
