UCPN (Maoist) leader Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has challenged the authorities to initiate legal action against him on cases related to conflict era murder and rights abuse.
The former prime minister made this remark while addressing a sit-in protest organised by the family members, friends and well-wishers of Chavilal Poudel and Bhimsen Poudel -- who were arrested on charges of their involvement in the murder of Krishna Adhikari of Fujel,Gorkha -- in front of District Police Office Chitwan. During the protest programme, they demanded that Poudel duo be immediately released as they were not involved in the murder of Adhikari.
Dr Bhattarai further said that as he was the head of the then Maoist people’s government during the decade-long insurgency period waged by his party, he would take full responsibility “for all the acts committed during that period”.
“So I challenge the authorities to arrest me and initiate legal action for all the conflict era cases,” he said.
Bhattarai, however, opined that as per the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the basis of the ongoing peace process in Nepal, all the conflict era cases should be resolved through Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
He also revealed to the assembled crowd who called themselves family members of the "wrongly convicted" and hence "victims" of the Fujel murder case that he has already met Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam and requested for the immediate release of those arrested in connection with the murder of Krishna Adhikari.
“If those arrested in connection with the murder case are not released immediately, then our struggle will move into the next phase,” Dr Bhattarai warned. He didn’t elaborate.
