Boosting capital investment critical for growth, says ADB

3:31 AM

Director General Juan Miranda of the South Asia Department of the Asian Development Bank ( ADB ) said that accelerating the execution of ongoing and new investment projects was a priority to address Nepal’s serious physical and social infrastructure deficit.

“This is a means to attain higher economic growth and much-needed employment opportunities in Nepal,” said Miranda during his three-day visit to the country.

According to Miranda, Nepal needs to resolve the crippling power crisis and improve air and road connectivity to integrate Nepal with neighbouring economies. “There is also a need to provide water and other services to rural and urban populations. This will unleash higher and more inclusive economic growth,” Miranda added. During his stay in Kathmandu, Miranda met with key government officials, including ministers, the chief secretary and the secretaries of the Finance, Agriculture, Energy, Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Urban Development ministries along with development partners and representatives from the private sector.

Miranda also jointly chaired a Tripartite Portfolio Review Meeting (TPRM) with Finance Secretary Shanta Raj Subedi and discussed the progress and actions to accelerate the implementation of ADB -assisted projects with the secretaries, heads of department and project directors. During the TPRM, the

government and the ADB agreed on measures to accelerate project execution and disburse more than US$ 200 million in 2014.

During the meeting with the private sector representatives, Miranda focused on priority areas such as energy, infrastructure, agri-business and tourism.

“The country needs to attract much higher private sector investment to create jobs, especially for the young. This requires a better business environment,” said Miranda.
