The chariot procession of Seto Machhindranath, a deity worshiped by both the Hindus and Buddhists, has started from Jamal, Kathmandu on Monday evening.
The chariot has now reached Ason, as the procession will conclude after the chariot is taken to Kaal Bhairav and Lagan on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
Located in Jana Bahal, a place between Ason and Indra chowk in Kathmandu, the temple of Seto Machindranath is believed to have been established around the 10th century.
Every year, the deity is bathed and repainted following religious rituals. Thereafter, the deity is placed in a chariot and paraded around Kathmandu followed by a platoon of soldiers dressed in ancient uniforms and muskets. Gunshots are fired at the start of the procession and also when the chariot stops for the night at the specified locations.
This festival is known as Jana Baha Dyah Jatra. Like every year, a huge crowd witnessed the chariot procession today and it is expected to follow in the following two days.
