The first tourist-standard lodge has opened at the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve. Spread over Rukum, Myagdi and Baglung districts in western Nepal, it is the only hunting reserve in the country.
The Dhorpatan Community Lodge threw open its doors on Monday under the management of the local community. Construction was started three years ago when the government announced the Nepal Tourism Year 2011 national campaign.
The lodge, which is expected to boost tourism in the area, has been built with the joint efforts of the government, tourism entrepreneurs and local clubs and organizations. Around Rs 3.5 million has been invested in the 24-room lodge.
The Micro Enterprise Development Programme (MEDP), a non-governmental organization, invested Rs 1.5 million in the project.
Banbuki Youth Club contributed Rs 1.4 million while the District Development Committee and the District Chamber of Commerce and Industry contributed Rs 200,000 and Rs 100,000 respectively.
Lack of modern hotels and lodges has been hurting tourism prospects in the area. Sightseers and hunters are forced to return on the same day or sleep in a tent for lack of accommodation.
