Nepali tea started receiving international attention after foreign tea buyers began scouring rural areas for locally grown tea leaves.
Representatives of an American company TILET has been travelling through the villages in Ilam district with the aim of purchasing processed tea directly from farmers.
Govinda Dahal, president of the Central Tea Cooperatives Association, said that the American company had raised the hopes of tea farmers as tea manufacturing companies run by them have been looking for markets.
“They start the procurement process after testing the tea at the factories,” he said. “They are ready to go to the sectors after they liked the tea s of four manufactures at the testing programme held at the office on Tuesday morning.”
Tinjure, Brothers and Aambote from Ilam and Pathivara Tea Industry from Panchthar had participated in the testing programme.
“We inform the customers after closely observing the entire process of manufacturing tea ,” said Alish Petersen. “We are here with the aim of promoting the Nepali tea industry and providing benefits to the farmers by not giving any chance to intermediaries.”
They concluded that Nepali tea could compete in the American and European markets if the manufacturers produced quality tea . They plan to visit the manufacturers and farmers in Ilam, Panchthar and Dhankuta, among other tea growing places.
An increased number of small and medium-level factories have been manufacturing tea as the tea market has begun to swell. Some of the tea manufacturers are facing an acute shortage of markets.
“Foreigners liking our tea here means that it has good prospects in the international market,” said Rabin Rai, secretary of the association. Lately, potential importers have been visiting the tea gardens and factories here in increasing numbers. A few weeks ago, a German tea m had arrived in the district.
