Govt renews NAC’s ground service pact

1:21 PM

The government has extended Nepal Airlines’ contract for ground handling services of Tribhuvan International Airport ( TIA ) for the next two years.

A commercial ground handling agreement was signed between the Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (Caan) on Friday after the previous agreement ended on February 11. Ground handling services include ramp services, passenger handling and cargo handling.

NAC Spokesperson Ram Hari Sharma said the agreement will be extended by three more years (five years in total) after NAC obtains the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Safety Audit for Ground Operations certification. “After the certification, NAC will have a monopoly on ground services for until February 11, 2019,” he said. Currently, NAC collects more than Rs 2 billion annually in ground handling charges from the international airlines. It is also the ailing national flag bearer’s bread and butter.

As per the agreement, NAC will give 12.5 percent of the earnings to the Caan from the earlier 10 percent. NAC has been given the contract to provide ground handling services to all foreign airlines except for Thai Airways and Indian Airlines. The ground handling service policy of NAC was implemented on August 24, 2004.

Earlier, amid complaints about thefts and tampered luggage, Caan had considered involving the private sector too in ground handling services. But the plan was dropped after NAC requested the Tourism Ministry not to seize its bread and butter. Currently, 29 international airlines connect TIA with 3.14 million annual passenger movements.
