Govt target to lessen adults illiteracy by 50 to 75 percent

The government has set the target of reducing the adult illiteracy rate by 50 to 75 percent until 2015.

This was announced at a program of interaction on the theme ´Education for All (EFA), Before and After 2015´ jointly organised here today by the Ministry of Education, UNICEF and other organisations.

It was shared at the program that the illiteracy rate was decreasing every year since the beginning of the literacy program in 1995.

As per the education agenda post-2015, there is the target of bringing various program for increasing access to education for the children with disabilities. Similarly, the program for using mother tongue for teaching-learning activities at schools would be given priority.

Spokesman of the Ministry of Education, Mahashram Sharma, said that the quality of education would be especially kept into consideration and stress laid on providing education that will enable students to compete in the international level.

Coordinator of the EFA Hridayaratna Bajracharya, presenting a working paper, stressed the need of mobilising the local bodies and the various governmental and non-governmental organisations to make the basic education accessible to all.

President of the National Campaign for Education Nepal, Babukaji Shrestha, presented a working paper on educational study carried out among various communities. He stressed on education useful for life in his working paper.

Human rights campaigner Gauri Pradhan, central president of PABSON Lakshya Bahadur KC and president of the Child Rights Alliance Dr Bijaya Sainju, among other speakers, called for laying special emphasis on programmes that focus on getting the children to schools and reduce the drop out rate.

The current literacy rate in Nepal is 66 per cent and it has been increasing by one per cent each year, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics
