A team of officials, including Physical Planning and Works Minister Bimalendra Nidhi , inspected the Sunkoshi bridge collapse site on Saturday. The bridge scheduled to be completed within the current fiscal year collapse d a week ago.
Expressing disbelief when Harkapur-Okhaldunga Road Project chief Arjun Aryal and Hulas Steel Company's Project Manager Uddhav Rana Magar said the wind was to blame for the collapse , Nidhi pledged to form an independent probe committee to find reasons behind the collapse and initiate swift action against those found guilty.
Nidhi also directed the ministry officials and the contractor company to complete the remaining work swiftly. He had reached the site as lawmakers Ramhari Khatiwada and Yagya Raj Sunuwar requested him in the parliament to look into the matter personally.
"It is outlandish to say that a structure of such scale collapse d due to the wind," said lawmaker and Nepali Congress leader Bal Bahadur KC, stressing that the investigation should not impede the work. Including Nidhi, the ministry's Secretary Tulsi Sitaula, Road Department's Director General Devendra Karki and lawmakers Deepshikha Sharma, Mohan Baral and Ramhari Khatiwada had reached the site. The team also inspected the bridge under construction at the Dudhkoshi river connecting Khotang and Okhaldhunga.
Meanwhile, Magar said it would take at least 20 days to reconstruct the bridge as some of the materials had to be rebuilt. Earlier, representatives of the National Insurance Company returned after completing the damage assessment but they are yet to make the report public.
Local resident, meanwhile, requested for speedy work on the bridge.
Waiba Construction Company and Hulas Steel had jointly won the tender for the bridge construction in 2002. However, the construction was delayed due to various reasons. While Hulas Steel is responsible for the installation of the truss, the remaining work is to be completed by Waiba Construction.
