National cricket team 'ready' to take on challenges; to leave for Malaysia on Tuesday

Nepali National Cricket Team is set to leave for Malaysia on Tuesday for the up-coming ACC Men’s Premier League that is scheduled to be held from April 29 to May 8 in Malaysia.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports bade a farewell to the team amid a function here in the Nepalese capital on Monday. The team will board on flight at 12.30 p.m. tomorrow.

Speaking at the farewell ceremony, Youth and Sports Minister Purusottam Poudel wished best of luck to the team for another journey of the cricket in Malaysia.

Poudel also assured additional awards to the team, if it is successful in the coming tournament. The government has recently approved Rs 500,000 each to the players, coach and the management team for their magnificent performance in the ICC World T20 held in Bangladesh.

The recent achievements in cricket has brought positiveness in the government to do something in the development of sports, said Minister Poudel, adding that it has attracted many sponsors as well.

The final squad includes captain Paras Khadka, vice-captain Gyanendra Malla, Sharad Vesawkar, Sompal Kami, Shakti Gauchan, Basanta Regmi, Rajkumar Pradhan, Binod Bhandari, Mehaboob Alam, Naresh Bahadur Budhayair, Sagar Pun, Ramnaresh Giri, Aarif Sheikh and Subash Khakurel.

Meanwhile, Bhuwan Karki, Puspa Thapa and Yagya Man Kumal are selected as the reserve players.

Sparking to media after the farewell program, captain Khadka said it is a time to play cricket again and that they are focused on it.

He said all the participating six teams are good. “However, as of our potentials, we can do it.”

It’s a tournament with lots of opportunity, said Khadka. “The victory in the tournament will lead us to play Two-Day format.”

The participating teams include Nepal, host Malaysia, UAE, Afghanistan, Hong Kong and Oman.

As the team had played lots of tournament in the last six months, coach Pubudu Dassanayake expressed his hope that the team will do well in this tournament too, though it could not give good performance in One-Day format held in New Zealand.
