Search on for those missing in Everest avalanche

4:30 AM

The search and rescue operations near Camp I and Camp II of Mount Everest in Solukhumbu district, which was hit by a massive avalanche Friday morning, have resumed today as the bodies of five of the 12 persons killed in the incident were airlifted to Kathmandu by Nepal Army (NA) chopper.

Personnel of Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and liaison officers from the tourism ministry who make up the rescue team are currently looking for the four persons missing in the avalanche. However, they say chances of finding them alive in the icy cold environs of the world's tallest peak has greatly diminished.  Guides from Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) and icefall doctors are also involved in search and rescue operations.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the seven high-altitude Sherpa mountaineering guides, porters and cooks have been handed over to their grieving kin in Lukla, according to NA’s Department of Public Relations.

The Home Ministry as well as the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) have confirmed the death of 12 persons in the avalanche that took place just below Camp II of Mount Everest in Solukhumbu district, but unconfirmed reports say the bodies of three more were still buried beneath the snow.

Four other mountaineers are still missing while six of the eight others who were rescued from the site of the avalanche are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Kathmandu after being  airlifted from Lukla. Some of those rescued yesterday are afflicted with serious frost-bite, reports quoted doctors involved in their treatment.

The tragedy took place after avalanche swept away climbing parties at 5,800 meters, just below Camp II of the world’s highest peak on Friday morning.

On Friday, an emergency meeting of the Central natural Disaster Relief Committee, chaired by Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam, had  announced Rs 40,000 as relief amount for each victim's family. Similarly, a private insurance company has also offered Rs 50,000 to each victim.

The insurance coverage for high-altitude workers had been raised to  Rs 1 million from Rs 400,000 by the government last year.
