Himalayan Expedition is all set to organise the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon and 60 K Everest Extreme Ultra Marathon on May 29, 2014.
Issuing a press statement, organiser Himalayan Expedition informs that all the preparation for the Marathon is completed.
“We have finished all the preparations. Check points are set in every 5-7 kilometers for the main event -- marathon. Water supply and medical facilities will be available at the check point where needed.” says Event Manager of both the races, Shikhar Pandey.
“Besides the basic safety procedures of marshals and doctors at different checkpoints and trail markers such as ribbons and flags so participants do not get lost – we also have stationed a helicopter as standby at Namche till mid afternoon. If there is serious injury, we send helicopter to evacuate participants – of-course helicopter get to different points according to the weather situation. The challenge is that you can never predict weather patterns in Mountains.” Pandey adds.
Himalayan Expedition is organising the event on May 29 for the past 11 years to commemorate the day Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillay conquered the world’s highest peak, Everest, for the first time on May 29, 1953.
Both the races will begin from Everest Base Camp located at an altitude of 5,364 meters going through beautiful landscape of the Everest region before ending at Namche Bazar (3,440 meters).
Himalayan Expedition has started organising the 60k Extreme Challenge from last year to celebrate the diamond jubilee (60 years) of the first ascent of Everest.
After grand success of the marathon, the 60k has received overwhelming responses from participants all across the globe, says the organiser.
Altogether 135 runners are competing in the full marathon including 96 foreigners and 39 locals. There are 5 foreigners in the Half Marathon, 10 foreigners and 7 locals in 60 K extreme ultra category.
The races will begin at 8:8:48 am, coinciding it with the height of Everest peak 8848 meter.
