1st meeting of Constitutional Council on Thursday

The Constitutional Council will meet on Thursday for the first time after the election of the Constituent Assembly (CA) on November 19 last year.
“A letter has been sent to all Council members on Tuesday,” said the government’s Chief Secretary Lilamani Poudel.

The meeting has been called at a time when most of the constitutional posts are lying vacant and political parties are raising voice to fill the posts.

As per the constitutional provision, incumbent Prime Minister chairs the seven-member Council. The other six members of the Council include Chief Justice, Parliamentary Party leader of key opposition party, House Speaker and three ministers nominated by the PM.

PM Sushi Koirala has named two Deputy PMs Bamdev Gautam and Prakash Man Singh as the Council members. He is yet to name the third minister.

Likewise, Acting Chief Justice Damodar Prasad Sharma will participate in the Council meeting as the serving Chief Justice, while UCPN (Maoist) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal will take part as the PP leader of  the main opposition party.
