Bhattarai demands TRC to resolve conflict-era cases

3:11 AM

UCPN (Maoist) senior leader Baburam Bhattarai has said that all the conflict-era cases including the case of Phujel’s Adhikari murder has to be resolved by forming a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

Bhattarai said this while meeting with Chhabilal Poudel and Bhimsen Poudel in Bharatpur, Chitwan on Monday. The Poudel duos have been arrested in connection with the Phujel’s Adhikari murder case.

“During conflict period, the state had involvement in 80 percent incidents, while the Maoist rebels had involvement only in 20 percent cases,” Bhattarai told journalists in a press meet organized after he met with the Poudel duos.

“If the conflict-era cases are raised on individual basis, that is not going to resolve the actual problem,” Bhattarai added.

Bhattarai’s comments have come at a time when Adhikari couple have been staging hunger strike for weeks in Bir Hospital demanding legal action against those involved in the murder of their son during the conflict period (1996-2006).

Earlier, the process of forming a TRC was stalled, as it was alleged that the government was drafting a law on TRC that would provide blanket amnesty to human rights violators of conflict period.

Similarly, it was also believed that major political parties had reached an understanding to bring at least the cases of serious rights violation to the jurisdiction of the TRC law. However, nothing concrete has been worked out on this matter, so far.
