11:13 AM

Lalitpur District Court (LDC) on Monday convicted 12 accused in Unity scam handing them three years imprisonment and slapping fine of Rs 10.62 million each. The court has also ordered for confiscating property worth the same amount from the convicts.

A single bench of Judge Tek Narayan Kunwar has, however, given clean-chit to 100 defendants. Among the 12 convicted include Kashi Ram Gurung, Chairman of the company, board members Netra Rajbanshi, Bhim Bahadur Gurung, Indra Bahadur BK. Similarly court also convicted defendants Bishnu Chhetri, Krishna Chhetri, Mahendra KC, Sishir Yogi, Lok Bahadur Tandon, Bishwonath Gautam, Ghanshyam Bastakoti, and Govinda Gyawali.

The court has also ruled that 17 of those 100 defendants, who were already serving jail term, will get compensation of Rs 1,00,000 from Unity Life International for each of the year served in prison.

According to the court order, even those share holders who had not lodged complaint will get back their money. As for the property of Unity Life international, the court noted that it need not say anything on the matter as a related case regarding bank fraud remains subjudice in Patan Appellate Court.

Police had filed case against 112 people on June 11, 2010 in the LDC charging them of cheating people by claiming to make them member of the company and collecting money from them.

All together, 3,68,710 people had become member of the company. The company had collected Rs 3.79 billion from its members. In the charge sheet, authorities had claimed that the company had prepared 44 fake plans and had also engaged in group accident insurance despite the fact that it had not obtained permission to do so.
