Former Senior Superintendent of Police Chuda Bahadur Shrestha on Saturday quit as a member of the government’s expert taskforce to draft the bills on transitional mechanism.
The taskforce members representing victims had on Friday objected to Shrestha’s inclusion on the team, citing his alleged involvement in the murder of five youths in Dhanusha during the insurgency in 2003.
Shrestha has cited media reports criticising his appointment to the panel as the reason for the decision to leave the panel.
Various rights advocacy groups had demanded the government to dismiss him citing the Supreme Court order to exclude individuals who were parties to the conflict and/or who had records of human rights violations while forming the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission on Enforced Disappearances.
Sadhuram Sapkota, joint secretary at the Peace Ministry and coordinator of the taskforce, said Shrestha’s resignation has not affected taskforce’s operations. He informed that the government will announce his replacement on Sunday.
