Adhikari murder case: Court completes recording statements of arrested Maoist cadres

8:49 AM

The Chitwan District Court on Wednesday completed recording the statements of two Maoist cadres, arrested in connection with the conflict-era Adhikari murder case, which is creating uproars in the parliament, of late.

Maoist cadres Chhabiraj Poudel and Bhismaraj Poudel provided their official statements to the court today, as they explained, from their perspectives, about what had occurred in the murder case.

The hearing was conducted in the bench of District Judge Binod Mohan Acharya. Government attorney Ek Narayan Lamsal argued on behalf of the plaintiff, i.e. the government itself.

Likewise, around two dozen lawyers are scheduled to take part in the court argument on behalf of the Maoist cadres. They include Prem Singh Dhami, Raman Kumar Shrestha and Mukti Pradhan, among others.

The District Attorney Office last Thursday filed a charge-sheet against 13 Maoist cadres for their alleged involvement in the Adhikari murder case. Eleven of the accused are absconding while two were arrested and put into judicial custody.

The case had brought a vertical split in the parliament and politics, as the key opposition UCPN (Maoist) has boycotted all meetings and proceedings citing the arrests and filing of the charge-sheets.

Meanwhile, speaking at a press meet in Nepalgunj today, Minister for Information and Communications, Minendra Rijal, said that the government is not in a position to focus on a particular case, such as Adhikari murder case.

“We are preparing to present bills on truth and reconciliation commission and disappearances, so as to look into war-era cases in its entirety. It would be difficult for us to intervene in the ongoing particular cases like the Adhikari murder case,” Rijal said.

Speaking at a different program in Kailali, Ram Bahadur Thapa, the General Secretary of UCPN (M)'s rival party, the CPN-Maoist, said the government is making attempts to wash away Maoists by raising the war-time cases.

“Reviving cases like Adhikari murder case is not fair. We suspect conspiracy here,” Thapa said.
