Stung by recent criticism from the media and general public over its poor treatment of cricket players and a possibility of anti-graft commission starting an investigation on its alleged mismanagement and malpractices, Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has decided to address the “legitimate demands” of national cricket players and provide the salaries and other facilities that has not been provided to the players for the last six months within a week.
A meeting of the top officials of CAN on Saturday took a decision to this effect while forming a three member talk team headed by its vice chairman Chatur Bahadur Chand to initiate dialogue with the agitated cricket players. CAN has also formed a disciplinarian committee under the leadership of Uttam Karmacharya while Divakar Ghale, Thakur Pahadi, Kiran Rana and Sandeep Pandey are its members.
However, national cricket team players have denied any possibility of talks until their demands are met. Saying that Nepali cricket has no future in the hands of the current CAN leadership, the players demanded a new leadership in the cricket’s governing body in the country.
National Cricket Team captain Paras Khadka had in a press conference on Thursday demanded that there is a need for new management in the CAN as the current CAN management is accountable.
"All the players are clear that the existing board is not appropriate for the development of cricket in the country," Khadka had said, adding that this board cannot take Nepali cricket to the next level.
The players had during the conference announced that they will boycott the Pepsi Standard Chartered One-Day National Cricket Tournament that kicked off last week, saying that the tournament is meaningless when they should have been in training for the upcoming ACC Premier League 2014 that is scheduled to start from May 1-7, 2014 in Malaysia.
