Chinese-made MA60 to land tomorrow

6:25 PM

Chinese-made MA60 aircraft is scheduled to land at Tribhuvan International Airport at 12:10 pm on Sunday, a day behind schedule.

The arrival of the first of the two 56-seater turboprop-powered airliner Modern Ark 60 means the national flag carrier will have a new plane for its domestic fleet after 28 years. “Due to documentation process, the delivery was pushed back by a day,” said Ram Hari Sharma, spokesperson for NAC.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (Caan) issued No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the aircraft at 4:30pm on Friday. Under the revised Air Operator Certificate Regulation 2012 (AOCR 2012), Caan first issues the NOC and then the AOC after operators acquire aircraft.

However, due to the delay in issuing the aircraft registration number, the MA60 will be arriving Nepal bearing

SXA-1131 registration number, or call sign. The Caan, after conducting a test

flight of the aircraft, is scheduled to issue the AOC and the registration number, according to a source.

Sharma said NAC will conduct test flights to Bhadrapur, Biratnagar, Bhairahawa and Dhangadhi before putting the plane into commercial operation. “The commercial operation will start after a week of the test flights.”

On April 3, China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC) had formally handed over one of two MA60 aircraft to the NAC. NAC will receive six Chinese-made aircraft (two MA60 and four Y12e manufactured by Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation) later this year.

Two of the planes are gifts from China. The fleet-less NAC will be receiving one of the four Y12e aircraft on June 30 and the rest by September 30.

The MA60 aircraft is made by China’s Xi’an Aircraft Industrial Corporation under the AVIC International Holding Corporation. Unnerved by two crashes in less than a year, the national flag carrier hopes to revive its domestic operations with a revamped fleet after its Chinese-made aircraft on order are delivered.

The MA60 will be used on Biratnagar, Pokhara, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj and Bhadrapur routes. The smaller Y12e will operate on remote sectors, including a number of tourist destinations. Nepal Airlines flew 20,591 passengers, down 44.15 percent y-o-y, in 2013.
