UCPN (Maoist) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal has warned the country’s courts against becoming “courts of the almighty” bent on using their “super power”.
The Maoist supremo said that if the nation’s courts begin to act as “courts of the almighty” then the country would slide back into anarchy and conflict again.
“In such a situation there will be danger of the country not getting the much-awaited constitution,” he said, in reference to a recent Supreme Court decision that it can take up the conflict era cases in absence of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
The former prime minister, who made these remarks while addressing the inaugural session the 19th National Convention of UCPN (M) student wing All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union (Revolutionary) in the capital on Friday, further opined that if there is even a slight mistake while forming the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission for the Disappeared, which should solely decide on the conflict-era cases then the entire constitution drafting process will be “seriously affected” and may even derail.
“The courts of law, government, political parties and other stakeholders are and should be directed by the 12-point agreement, the Interim Constitution and Comprehensive Peace Accord,” he said, “If any of them tries to go against these agreements then there is a danger of huge conflict and chaos in the Nepali society.”
The former prime minister also expressed dismay over what he termed as conspiracy to drag the Maoist leaders into the International Criminal Court for conflict era cases.
