EC proposes amendment of local body act 2048

The Election Commission (EC) has proposed amendment of the Local Body (Election Work Procedure) Act 2048 in view of the local body elections.

The proposed amendment calls for participation of at least 50 percent women while electing the members, vice-chair and chair at ward, VDC and district development committee.

Chief Election Commissioner Neelkanth Uprety said the EC has submitted the amendment proposal to the government.

At a programme organized by the EC to inform the political parties, parliamentarians and the media persons regarding the proposal on Thursday, CEC Uprety said, "Once the proposal of the amendment of Local Body (Election Work Procedure) Act 2048 is passed, it would be a milestone on women's achievements of the political rights."

According to him, the proposal was prepared in line with the EC's gender and inclusion policy 2070.

Similarly, Election Commissioner Ila Sharma said the amendment proposal was made to promote the inclusion policy and increase women's participation in the local body elections.

At the programme, parliamentarians Mahin Limbu, Mahalaxmi Upadhyay and Ishwori Neupane said they would extend help from their sides to pass the Act from the parliament.

The programme was also attended by secretaries from the ministries of federal affairs and local development; women, children and social welfare; and law and justice.
