The government of Pakistan has provided compensation to the family of a Nepali citizen Sona Sherpa who was killed in an attack by Islamist fundamentalists in Pakistan last June. The bereaved family received one million rupees in compensation from the Pakistan government at an initiative Nepal's Ambassador to Pakistan Bharat Poudel.
Charge d'affaires of Embassy of Pakistan in the capital, Nazar Hussain, handed over the cheque of that amount to Sherpa's spouse Doma amidst a programme at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Monday. A total of 11 people from Pakistan, Nepal, America, Ukraine and Slovenia were killed in the attack took place at Nanga Parbat (peak).
The Pakistan Government has not provided compensation to the other bereaved families. Doma is the first Nepali receiving the compensation for her slain husband. Her husband reached Nanga Parbat as a tourist guide. It may be noted that at an initiative of Ambassador Poudel, a Nepali citizen Tilak Bahadur Thapa Magar of Tanahu who had been sentenced to life imprisonment by an Afghanistan court was granted a pardon by the Afghan president. Likewise, five Nepalis were freed from a jail in Iraq and two from Iran.
