Amid growing sexual assault cases in the country, Minister for Energy, Radha Gyawali has said that Nepal needs to provision death penalty for heinous rape cases.
“Rape cases have to be taken seriously and there must be penalty something at par with capital punishment,” said Minister Gyawali.
Speaking at a program of National Women’s Commission in Kathmandu Tuesday, Minister Gyawali said such a provision is essential to curtail the growing number of crimes against women in Nepal.
“The inhumane crimes especially against girl child can be ended or drastically reduced only when we arrange something similar to death penalty,” she said.
“We ourselves are planning to bring strong laws to bring the rapists into the legal net effectively,” the Minister said.
In a different note, she said 50 percent women representation has to be ensured in the local body elections.
“If we increase women participation in local body elections, it will have the positive ripple effects in other sectors, too,” she added.
