Food shortage in Humla

12:24 PM

People in Humla district are facing acute shortage of food after they failed to receive cereals from the Humla branch of Nepal Food Corporation.

People here are now surviving by taking thukpa (noodles) and bread made out of flour imported from Taklakot of Tibet, China. And they are forced to pay as high as Rs. 4,000 for a 25-kg packet of flour, which is also reported to be substandard.

Shanker Hari Acharya, Chief District Officer, said the local administration has written to the zonal, regional, and central offices including the Ministry concerned demanding regular food supply.

The District Food Management Committee has demanded 31,500 quintals of the rice to meet the demand for food this year in the district.

Meanwhile, District Food Corporation claimed that the food shortage in the district was a result of the failure to allocate the required Rs. 150 million to manage food for the district.

It stated that the Corporation is planning to import 1,412 quintals of food through road transport and 6,292 quintals of food via air for this year.
