Chinese mobile handsets have been slowly making inroads into the Nepali market. Products from Huawei, Lenovo and ZTE, in particular, are appearing in the highly competitive domestic smartphone segment where South Korean juggernaut Samsung has a dominant presence.
Huawei is one of the Chinese manufacturers that has set its eyes on the Nepali market. It is a leading maker of telecom equipment, and has a noticeable presence in that sector in Nepal.
The company is now trying to replicate its success in the equipment segment in the mobile handset business.
Call Mobility, authorised distributor of Huawei products in Nepal, said they had been expanding their market in the smartphone segment aggressively.
Roshan Neupane, head of marketing at Call Mobility, said that their first step was to increase brand awareness among the people in the domestic market. “First of all, we need to erase the preconceived notion that Chinese phones are of low quality,” he said. “So, we are launching various promotional campaigns across the nation.” He added that that they were also focusing on expanding distribution channels and service centres. “We have opened 18 service centres across the country so far.”
Two months ago, the company launched four mobile sets in the domestic market while inaugurating their first smartphone store in Kathmandu on New Road. It had rolled out the Huawei Ascend P6, Ascend Y 511, Ascend G 610 and Ascend G 700 models. The company has promoted the P6 as the world’s slimmest smartphone.
The P6 comes with a 4.7-in LED display and is 6.18 mm thick. Its features include metal frame, 1.5 GHz Quad Core processor, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system and dual cameras (8 mega pixel rear and 5 mega pixel front). Likewise, the Ascend G 700 and G 610 both have a 5-in touchscreen and 1.2 GHz Quad Core processor and run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system. Both the phones are powered by a 2150 mAh battery.
Likewise, the Ascend Y511 boasts a 4.5-in touchscreen and is powered by Dual Core 1.3 GHz processor. It runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean processor. These smartphones are available in the price range of Rs 13,475 to Rs 42,769 in the domestic market.
