Three Madhes-centric parties effortful for unification have agreed on the number of organisational layers of the new party. The top position of chairman, however, remains to be decided.
Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party (TMLP), Sadbhawana Party (SP) and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Nepal (MJF-N) have agreed to go for a 301-member central committee, 65-member Political Committee and 31-member procedural committee. For the structure of the top leadership, the cross-party taskforce is weighing options.
One of the options is to go for the presidium system wherein all the three existing chairmen—Mahanta Thakur (TMLP), Rajendra Mahato (SP) and Upendra Yadav (MJF-N)—will have equal status and chair the meeting on rotational basis. The other option is to have one as presiding chairman and other two as co-chairmen heading either party organisation or parliament.
But TMLP General Secretary Sarvendra Shukla said the taskforce has not decided on the sharing basis for the second model and will leave it for the top leaders to settle. The three parties are also discussing the name, party flag and election symbol. Among the names being mooted are Samjbadi Loktantrik Forum-Nepal and Loktan-trik Sadbha-wana Forum-Samjbadi. The three parties have been holding talks for over two months to form a new party. Their move was motivated by a decline in the number of seats won by Madhesi parties in the second Constituent Assembly polls.
