A minor was killed and over 65 families rendered homeless after a fire engulfed a settlement at Thalhi, Jamunimdhepura-6 in Saptari district on Thursday.
DSP at Saptari District Police Office, Raj Kumar Baidwar, informed that Rukshar Khatun, daughter of one Mohammed Aslam, died in the incident and two other children have gone missing in the inferno.
The fire started from the house of one local, Mohammed Salamat, at around 1:30 pm. According to local victims, the fire was kindled from a coil lit to drive out mosquito after a cow gave birth at Salamat's cowshed. One of the victims, Nasar Ahmed, said that they could not salvage their belongings as almost every head of the family were at the wheat field for harvesting.
According to DSP Baidwar, it is believed that property worth Rs 15 million was destroyed in the fire. Chairman of Saptari Red Cross Society, Naresh Kumar Yadav informed that the money sent by the victims' family members working abroad were also destroyed in the fire.
The fire was doused with the help of two fire engines from Rajbiraj and Lahan along with security personnel from the Armed Police Force and Nepal Army and villagers.
The incident site lies some 5 km from the district headquarters Rajbiraj.
