The boycott of the national team members hit hard the title defence of the Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club who succumbed to a rare five-wicket defeat against Birgunj in the Senior One-day National cricket tournament in Pokhara on Friday.

Seven of the national team stalwart including skipper Paras Khadka and his deputy Gyanendra Malla are contracted to the departmental team and their decision to boycott the tournament on Thursday meant APF fielded a fringe players and lost the opening match. Apart from Khadka and Malla, APF also missed services of Sharad Vesawkar, Basanta Regmi, Amrit Bhattarai, Pradeep Airee and Shakti Gauchan.

In the absence of the key players, APF were in deep trouble at 64-6 by the 14th over. However, a 88-run stand for the seventh wicket between Bhuwan Karki and Sanjam Regmi helped the holders post a respectable 181 runs in 44.4 overs. Karki was trapped leg before wicket after scoring 59 off 62 deliveries which included six sixes and two fours. Regmi played a

supporting role making unbeaten 42 from 117 deliveries. Ram Naresh Giri (3-35), Arif Sheikh (3-34) and Gaurav Singh (3-43) shared nine wickets for Birgunj.

Birgunj were themselves in dire strait at 50-4 by the 17th over but half centuries from No 5 batsman Sheikh and Robin Gurung steered their team home, finishing at 186-5 in 41.3 overs. Man-of-the-match Sheikh and Gurung put on 103 runs fifth wicket to elevate their team to a winning position. Sheikh remained unbeaten on 56 runs while Gurung scored a fluent 51-ball 52 with six boundaries and two sixes. Sheikh hit eight fours and one six in his 85-ball innings.
