Bad weather stalls search for three missing climbers in Kanchenjunga

6:30 PM

A deadly avalanche has been reported in Kanchenjunga massif in Taplejung district on Thursday, in which three climbers have gone missing. The government has initiated search operation but bad weather condition has stalled the process.

The three climbers include an Indian Chanda Gayan, 35, and her guides Temba Sherpa, 23 and Dawa Wonchu Sherpa, 28. Both the Sherpas are from Tamku-5 in Sankhuasabha district.

“The avalanche occurred at an estimated altitude of 7,300m while the three were descending for Camp 3”, Lakpa Sherpa, reservation manager at Seven Summit Treks, the company which organised the expedition, told Nepalnews.

“The last communication details with the climbers are unknown.”

“We have sent helicopter for search and rescue but it is not being able to land due to bad weather.” says Tilak Pandey, an official at the Ministry of Tourism.

“The incident occurred three days ago at the height of 7,500 meter of Mt Yalung Kang (8505m). But it was noticed just today.”

The team of missing Gayan and her two Sherpa guides were allowed to climb Mt Yalung Kang from normal side for the period of 75 days from April 10, 2014.
