Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Bhim Prasad Acharya has announced that Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), the national carrier, will purchase 22 brand new aircraft for domestic as well as international flights by the year 2019.
Speaking at an interaction organised by Reporters’ Club Nepal in the capital on Saturday, Minister Acharya informed, “Currently one NAC aircraft is serving the domestic route and two aircraft which are currently grounded will be repaired and brought into operation in the domestic sector within four months. NAC is also in the process revamping the fleet with six Chinese-made aircraft by October this year.”
He further said that the government plans to revamp NAC’s fleet with four wide-bodied aircraft (Boeings and Airbuses for international flights) and 11-narrow bodied ones to operate them in business and service oriented sectors both.
Saying that international airline companies have captured a market worth Rs 87 billion belonging to NAC, Minister Acharya revealed plans to end cartel in the country’s aviation sector for good by coming up with a good business plan within one month and resume more flights in profitable domestic and international destinations to regain the market share it has lost.
