Death toll in Mt Everest avalanche rises to nine

The death toll in an avalanche just below Camp II of Mount Everest in Solukhumbu district has risen to nine.

According to Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), an official at the Trekking and Mountaineering Section under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) has confirmed the death of nine mountaineers while three have been found injured and three others still missing. 

The tragedy took place after avalanche swept away climbing parties at 5,800 meters, just below Camp II of the world’s tallest mountain on Friday morning.

The identity of most of the deceased is yet to be confirmed, but it is believed that all are Nepali mountain guides and porters.

Reports coming in have ascertained the identity of four deceased – Dorje Sherpa, Mingmar Sherpa, Tsering Sherpa and Tenzing Sherpa. They all hail from Namche of Solukhumbu district, it is learnt.

MoCTCA has confirmed that around 15 mountaineers with at least six expeditions including Summit Nepal, Alpine Ascent, Himalayan Guides and Beuyl,  were swept away by the avalanche and that nine bodies have been recovered so far.

Personnel of Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and liaison officers from the tourism ministry are currently involved in rescue operation. Reports said guides from Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) and icefall doctors are also involved in search and rescue operations.
