Locals of 10 VDCs in the northern belt of Khotang district have faced acute shortage of food grains due to drought for a long time.
The locals of Baksila, Phedi, Khartamchha, Baspani, Sapteshwar, Sungdel, Dipsung, Rakha and Jalpal are adversely affected due to the drought and are having hard time managing food grains these days, locals complained.
No winter crops like wheat, potato and others were produced this year, said Samir Rai, a local of Baksila VDC.
Baksila based depot of Nepal Food Corporation is not able to provide food grains as per the locals' demand, Rai added.
However, depot Chief Ganesh Prasad Pokharel, said that the depot is unable to provide food grains as the Food Corporation cut down the food supply to the depot this year.
The corporation had provided 2,000 quintals of rice last year whereas only 1,200 quintals of rice has reached to the depot, therefore, it has created extra pressure to meet the local demand, the depot chief added.
As a result, only 50 kilogrammes of rice has been provided to the locals demanding three quintals, the depot sources said.
It might be noted that the depot has been providing food grains according to the VDC's recommendation.
