Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Bhim Prasad Acharya on Friday announced that the government will provide Rs 1.5 million to each family of Sherpas who lost their lives in a deadly avalanche in Mt Everest on April 18.
Addressing the meeting of the legislature-parliament today, Minister Acharya said Rs 10 million will be provided through insurance coverage meant for mountaineering guides and Rs 500,000 through the Cabinet decision to each family of the victims.
He further assured that the government will also bear all the costs for the education of the victims' children.
Minister Acharya said that the government agencies were active in search and rescue operation immediately after the avalanche in the highest peak in the world which killed 13 Sherpa guides and cooks while three are still missing.
Saying that the government was sensitive towards the pain and suffering of the family of the victims including the entire Sherpa mountaineering community, the tourism minister requested the Sherpa guides to continue the climb the Mt Everest.
The Sherpa guides had during a recent meeting with Minister Acharya at Mt Everest base camp said they are still mourning the deaths and disappearances in the April 18 tragedy and would give a rest to Mt. Everest this year as they were unable and least motivated to carry out their highly risky works.
